Maura Hamilton

Candidate for Speaker

Maura Hamilton is a junior from a small town called Chatham, New Jersey, and is a student in both the College of Nursing and the South Carolina Honors College. In the future, she is interested in non-traditional roles in the nursing field. Maura was first drawn to the University of South Carolina by the academic success of the nursing school and the campus life. Although she is far from New Jersey, Maura has quickly made a home for herself in South Carolina, and she is excited to see the impact she will have on campus through serving as the Speaker of the Student Body Senate.  Maura joined Student Government during her freshman year as a Student Senator representing the College of Nursing in the 115th Student Senate. She quickly became more involved in the organization and has served as a voting member of the Sustainability, Powers and Responsibilities, Rules, and Finance committees. Maura also served as Chairwoman of the Judiciary Committee and was a member of the 115th’s Ad Hoc committee on Financial Reform. Maura was elected as Speaker of the 116th Student Senate last March,

As Speaker, Maura is passionate about servant leadership. As a student with a non-traditional major to serve in Student Government, she seeks to send a message to fellow students that their voices are heard on campus, no matter who they are or what they are studying. Maura aims to empower her Senators to pass legislation that will help students in and outside of the classroom and address relevant issues such as price transparency, Wi-fi, housing, and more to catalyze a better student experience. She is also committed to restructuring the Student Senate internally through reviewing and editing the Student Government Codes to better relate to the student experience. Ultimately, Maura wants to ensure Student Government is more accessible, transparent, and productive to foster change and cultivate progress on campus.

Outside of Student Government, Maura is extremely involved in other parts of campus, a testament to her passion for serving others and the university. She has previously been a Student Life Ambassador, and is an Admissions Representative for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, where she helps prospective students, applicants, and their families. She is also a member of Delta Zeta sorority and previously served on their executive board as the Vice President of Health and Wellbeing and as the Big Little Coordinator as part of their new member team.
